Here you will find a quick guide to important information regarding procedures and policies at P.S. 6.
Grades Pre-K through 5 are expected to be in school by 8:20am every day. Grades Pre-K-5 should enter through the school yard on Snyder Avenue before 8:20am.
Bus children will enter through the Bedford Avenue entrance.
Breakfast is offered free every school day to all children from 8:20 am-8:40 am.
All Pre-K-2 students are dismissed at 2:30pm. All 3-5 students are dismissed at 2:40pm. All adults authorized to pick up children must have their names on the child’s Blue Card kept in the Main Office. Teachers will not release a child to someone not on the card. (Blue Cards are sent home at the beginning of the year for parents to fill out.)
It is imperative that children be picked up promptly.
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not pick up your child on time, they will be escorted to the main office for pick up.
PICK UP Locations by Grade:
Pre-K: Pick up and sign out in the cafeteria.
Kindergarten: Schoolyard on Snyder Avenue. Students are brought outside by their teachers; parents & caregivers wait outside the doors for pick up.
1st Grade: Lunchroom. Students are brought to the lunchroom by their teachers; parents & caregivers wait outside for pick up.
Grade 2: In the gym. Students are brought to the gym by their teachers; parents & caregivers enter to pick them up.
Grades 3-5: Middle doors of the schoolyard on Snyder Avenue. Parents & caregivers may wait in the yard for their caregivers.
Attendance & Lateness
Attendance is extremely important. If your child is ill and unable to come to school please send a note of explanation even if you have not visited a doctor, as all absences must be documented. In the case of a prolonged absence please check with your child’s teacher about the best way to pick up and turn in assignments.
Flyers typically go home in your child’s backpack every day. School flyers, classroom news, and PTA announcements are sent home in your child’s backpack.
School Breakfast is offered free to all children from 8:20am-8:40am.
Contacting the School
Call the Main Number (718) 856-6560, and press 0 for the Main Office. Visitors & Volunteers to the school must sign in and show photo identification at the Security Desk in the Lobby then proceed to the main office to check in and get a visitors pass. Also, if you need to reach your child’s classroom, you must call the Main Number.
Health & Safety
P.S. 6 has a nurse on duty during school days on the 1st Floor across from the Main Office. Parents whose children become ill at school will be contacted to pick up their child. It is important that parents and guardians supply the school with their telephone number and alternate phone numbers where a responsible party can be reached in their absence.
Lunch is served free of charge to all students at P.S.6. Children may also bring lunch from home. The school menus are sent home monthly by the administration. The lunch period is 50 minutes and includes Recess in the schoolyard.
There are three Lunch Periods, Lunch Period 1 (Grades Pre-K, K, 1); Lunch Period 2 (Grades 2,3), Lunch Period 3 (Grade 4, 5).
All backpacks and outerwear must be labeled with your child’s name. The school is not responsible for lost or misplaced items. The Lost and Found is located outside the gym. If carrying a cell phone is necessary, it must be kept in the student’s backpack during the school day and accessed only after leaving school.
The school asks that parents return the Photo Release form granting permission for their child’s picture to be published in electronic or print format.
P.S. 6 T-Shirts
Students are allowed to wear their P.S. 6 t-shirts in addition to their uniform and school sweat suits. T-shirts are also worn on class field trips. T-shirts are available for sale in the main office for $10.

The website is the best place to keep up to date about P.S. 6 and PTA announcements, and to find information about the school and the PTA. Check the site regularly for school news, get updates on school-wide activities and access the school calendar.
School Safety & Security
All Visitors & Volunteers to the school must sign in and show photo identification at the Security Desk in the Lobby to receive their Visitors Pass. It is essential for the safety of the children that we follow this protocol.
During the year classes enjoy Field Trips. Permission slips will be sent home in backpacks – slips must be signed and returned in order for your child to attend. Children are asked to wear their Red Trip Tees, which are for sale for $10 in the Main Office.
